Otu in a hurry to Revamp Cross River

Upon assuming office, Governor Otu was faced with the enormous task of fixing the state's deteriorated road infrastructure, dilapidated public assets (State Library Complex, Governor's office etc), a failing water board, and underperforming tourist attractions like the Ranch Resort, Tinapa etc, largely exacerbated by the state’s limited resources.

In line with his "people-first" policy and in response to economic challenges stemming from rising fuel prices, the governor increased civil servants' minimum wage to N40,000, which was later raised to N70,000. Promotions for civil servants that were not previously implemented are now being carried out, alongside the strengthening of the civil service workforce with the addition of 2,500 staff in the recently concluded state employment exercise.

To ensure that retirees received their long-overdue gratuities, Governor Otu approved N10 billion for the first phase of payments, which have already been paid. Plans are underway for the second phase.

The roads in the state capital were severely riddled with potholes, making driving through Calabar a challenging experience. However, Governor Otu authorized a comprehensive overhaul of all roads within the metropolis. It is now a refreshing sight to see previously impassable and neglected streets fully reconstructed and asphalted, with over 100 road network rehabilitated and ongoing. Residents have happily moved past the days of navigating pothole-riddled streets.

Road rehabilitation projects are currently ongoing in various locations across the state, in Akamkpa, Ugep network roads, Ikom network roads, Ogoja, and the famous Yahe-Wanikande-Wanokom road in Yala, along with the long abandoned Adiabo-Ikoneto Road, which had been neglected for over 30 years.

To ensure contractors return to the impassable Calabar Itu road due to unpaid compensations, the state governor took over the payments of compensation to tune of N500m. In total, over 200 kilometers of road infrastructure are being constructed across the state.

To restore the serenity Calabar is known for, Governor Otu approved the removal of refuse from the streets and reinstated regular street sweeping and mowing of public spaces. The most visible impact of the Otu led administration's efforts, within a month in office, was the disappearance of garbage heaps from major streets and highways in Calabar. Since May 29, 2004, there is a consensus that a new Calabar that is clean and green has emerged.

The once dark streets of Calabar have been transformed with the installation of streetlights, bringing vibrancy back to the city. Local governments that had been in darkness for nearly a decade, such as Bekwarra and Akpabuyo, have been reconnected to national grid, easing life for residents. Recently, the state government acquired 10,000 solar power systems to provide electricity to 10,000 homes in rural communities that are not connected to the national grid. Gov. Otu is making frantic to provide power solutions across the State.

Modern traffic control has returned to the metropolis with the installation of contemporary traffic lights, significantly reducing traffic accidents. Calabar has also witnessed beautification efforts in major roundabouts, the Millennium Park, and the restoration of the Zoo Garden, enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.

The previously dilapidated state library, governor's office, lodges etc have been revitalized, presenting a new image befitting government facilities. The failing water board is undergoing rehabilitation, with tests being conducted to ensure that water flows into homes from the state water board.

In terms of security, it is no longer news that at some point, Calabar and indeed, Cross River recorded unprecedented security challenges, including robbery, kidnapping for ransom, and cultism, which severely hindered economic and social activities. However, barely a year into Governor Otu's tenure, Cross River has experienced remarkable improvements in security. The state is now safer and more attractive for investment.

Under the leadership of Sen. Bassey Otu, Cross River State has successfully conducted a soil fertility mapping test, leveraging on its abundant arable land to enhance agricultural investment. This achievement makes Cross River the first state in Nigeria to obtain a soil fertility map license.

Additionally, the governor has launched the "Project Grow" initiative, which offers financing to small and medium holder farmers, enabling them to upscale to large scale mechanized farming. This initiative aims to create wealth for residents and indigenes in the state.

Governor Otu has also repaid over N60 billion in inherited state debts.

The Cross River State governor has made a strong start, laying the groundwork for a prosperous future for Cross River. He is rebuilding and bridging the eroding confidence on government through developmental initiatives across all sectors and positioning the state as reference for excellence
